Small steps #2

Preview

One thing I’ve become aware of recently, for clients and sometimes myself, is a tendency to want to do everything at once. To take big steps, fix everything and be ‘done’ perfect, just right.

There are a few things I want to observe about this;

  • We are OK as we are. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have ambition, or want to improve. I just mean that it’s OK to be where we are right now. It’s from here that we move off towards the next thing.

  • Big steps often end in falls. Trying too hard to get somewhere fast means at some point we ‘fail’ , or perceive that we fail. Remember the ladders I talk about? You can download my free ‘One Small Step’ PDF from the shop as a reminder if you like.

  • Is it a natural response to everything that’s going on in the world outside? Could it be that we feel the need to be ready ‘just in case’? If so, let’s remind ourselves that we don’t need to manage the world, just OUR world. The world on our doorstep. This is where we have influence and make a difference. Smile to your neighbour, call your friend, feed yourself well, love where you can.

If this feels like you at the moment, here are some tips for slowing down and allowing yourself to take smaller steps;

  1. Breathe. Take a moment to just sit and be. Notice your self. Relax your shoulders. Breathe. 5 minutes, whenever you need it.

  2. Ask yourself what you need, right now, in this moment. Not tomorrow or in a month, but NOW.

  3. Look up and out. Moving your gaze to the horizon settles your nervous system.

Each of these small things creates space, so that you can bring your attention back to what is important today.

This isn’t intended as a sales pitch. However, if you would like to ponder more and explore your feelings around these ideas, my retreats are a perfect place to do that. The next big retreat is in November, with themes of loss and grief. I’ll be co hosting with Emma Skilton with incredible food from Sandy Cluney. You can find out more via the link below. The Early Bird Offer runs until Friday 12th September.
