Sleeping Well as Summer Approaches: How to Flow with the Season

As the mornings grow lighter and the sun rises earlier, many of us notice a subtle shift in our sleep patterns. You might find yourself waking a little earlier, feeling a bit more energised—or, conversely, a bit more tired. The change in seasons is more than just warmer weather; it’s a signal to our internal systems that it’s time to adjust.

Here’s how you can work with—not against—this seasonal transition.

🌞 Morning Light is Your Friend

Getting outside into natural light early in the day is one of the most powerful (and free!) ways to support your sleep. Morning sunlight helps regulate your circadian rhythm—the internal clock that tells your body when it’s time to wake up and when it’s time to rest. Studies have shown that early light exposure can help stabilise sleep patterns and boost mood.

Even just a few minutes in the garden with your tea, or a short walk before breakfast, can gently signal to your body that the day has begun.

WAKE A LITTLE EARLIER - AND DON’T FIGHT IT

If you're waking up earlier than usual, you're not alone. Our sleep tends to shorten slightly in summer, and our bodies often align with the earlier sunrise - we are ‘programmed ‘to wake within two hours of sunrise. Instead of fighting it, try going to bed a little earlier, or simply enjoy the peacefulness of the early hours. There's something lovely about being awake while the world is still quiet. You can reframe it as ‘me time’ and enjoy the quiet before the rest of the household is sleeping.

And remember: just because you’re up early doesn’t mean you need to power through the whole day on adrenaline…

💤 Napping, But Make It Strategic

If you feel a lull in the early afternoon, a short nap can work wonders. Keep it to 20 minutes to avoid grogginess, and aim for early afternoon so it doesn’t interfere with your night-time sleep. Strategic napping can help you stay energised, especially as your body adjusts to a slightly new rhythm. Take into account what else you have planned - if you are going out in the evening, a nap can give you the boost you need to enjoy yourself.

🌿 Sleep Changes With the Seasons - And That’s OK

Just like we eat differently and move differently across the year, our sleep patterns shift too. Research increasingly supports the idea that sleep isn’t static—it’s influenced by daylight, temperature, and lifestyle changes. Being flexible, rather than rigid, with your sleep routine helps you flow with these natural shifts.

If you’re finding the transition tricky, I offer a self-paced Sleep Course designed to help you understand your unique sleep patterns, create a calming routine, and wake feeling truly rested. The course covers many aspects of sleep, and is based on years of experience working with clients with varying sleep difficulties.

✨ Let summer light gently nudge your routine - without frustration or worry. With a little awareness and flexibility, you can move into the season feeling more in tune, more energised, and more rested.
